Biggest mystery of the II World War...
In 1943 most German cities were under heavy air raids of Allied planes, bombing strategic sites of War Industry. Nazi authorities decided to relocate them to safer underground locations. Silesian Industrial Society, and later ORGANIZATION „TODT” (responsible for construction of Hitler's secret headquarter – Wolf's lair) were ordered to construct a network of enormous underground halls that received mysterious nickname – project RIESE („GIANT”). The purpose of these constructions remains unknown... We will explain you the fate of slave workers forced to drill out underground cities and the history of this mysterious complex – both – myth and facts. Hitler's New Secret headquarter? Factories of „Wunderwaffe” - wonderful weapon to change the fate of II World War? Underground experimemtal plant? See the places that historians quarrel about with your own eyes!
Tour Itinerary:
A visit to KL Gross Rosen – camp that became the source of slave workers for project RIESE.
Konzentrazions Lager Gross – Rosen has been created in summer of 1940 as a branch of KL Sachsenhausen. It was one of the most important Nazi concentration camps. It became infamous not only for its horrifying and humiliating conditions, but also for for physically harsh forced labour. A leading principle in the camp was: „Vernichtung durch Arbeit” - „extermination through labor”. The former camp doctor, who later worked in Auschwitz and Mauthausen, during his trial described the the reality with following words „the living conditions of Gross -Rosen prisoners were harsher than those of any other camp, because the work took place mainly in a quarry”. Starvation, daily 12 hour shifts and lack of medical help were lethal to approx 40 000 people out of 125.000 of camp's prisoners. It is a place of martyrdom of Poles, Jews and prisoners from various european countries - English, French, Dutch, Norwegians.
Lunch brake in Świdnica – since the middle ages that city has been famous in Poland for its beer. One of the best in Europe. We stop at a small regional restaurant with delicious specialities of Polish cuisine at prices you will find more than reasonable :)
Next stop is the largest known underground complex – Wolfs- Berg. Total space of 31000 cubic meters has been drilled out in a solid gneiss rock. Underground halls, corridors and guard posts make a stunning impression on every visitor. These walls are silent witnesses of mysterious history of this complex and its victims. The tour takes about 1h. Part of the corridors is under water so we use the boat to see flooded parts of the complex.
Throughout the year temperature is about 5-8 degrees celsius so please bring warm, water resistant clothes.
